Response to Renee Wilson's Schematic Design
Renee Wilson’s concept is based off of three words coming together: Work, Move, Play. Renee has some very interesting ideas to combine the old historic aspects of the building with her new contemporary ideas. On the exterior she wants to bring back the original shop window, which was on the Orange street façade. It is a great idea because it brings in more natural light. In addition she wants to restore the old windows on the first floor that are also on the Orange street façade. These windows will be lined up with the windows from the second floor. Again, this will help to bring in more natural light and help create more alignment and cohesion. On the interior Renee wanted to integrate showroom and workspace. This is another great idea because it will save space for this small footprint. It will also show clients how people actually work in these typical workstations. There are three different furniture systems that Duke has on their standards list. These will be showcased in the showroom and the textiles on the panels will be magenta, steel grey, and black. I am not sure about this choice of colors since it may be more appropriate to use the colors that Duke will use. This way their customers will be able to see exactly what type of product they will receive. The only other concern that I had deals with the second floor. Renee wanted to remove the second floor all together. Although this will help open up the space, there is not enough square footage to support the needs of the programming. Overall there are some solid ideas however it needs to be developed further to help tie in the concept and other issues of concern.
